Aquaculture + Hydroponics = Aquaponics

Combining Systems

Aquaponics is a convenient marriage between Hydroponics and Aquaculture; the hybrid industry far more efficient, than either parent.
You have Hydroponics, used for growing plants without soil in a perfect cultured environment and then Aquaculture, growing fish.  Both have to change their water every so often, as certain contaminants, such as ammonia build up in the system and makes the system less productive.

Aquaponics creates a circulation from fish to plant, plant to fish.
Only after a big mistake or in case of disease would you need to change the water, with an aquaponic system.  The fish put nutrients into the water, the nitrogen fixing bacteria in the gravel (or whatever medium) change the ammonia , from fish urine into nitrogen, the plants eat the nitrogen and other nutrients and in turn return clean water to the fish.

By allowing the water to fall, back into the pond, it aerates the water and allows you to keep far more fish in your pond.

All you need to put in it once it's set up is fish food.  Aquaponic systems are super efficient, and organic.  You can produce masses of food in virtually no space at all, and with few of the usual problems faced with more traditional gardening methods.
